The broader field of AI focused on understanding and generating human language, which large language models are a modern, powerful version of.

Natural Language Processing, or NLP, is the general area of AI concerned with understanding and producing human language. Large language models are today’s most capable form of NLP, but the term also covers older, simpler techniques. In everyday conversation, NLP and LLM are often used loosely to mean the same thing.
